Navigating the expansive worlds of Minecraft requires reliable tools for tracking your location and mapping out terrain. The cartography table serves as a specialized utility block that simplifies map management for adventurers. Understanding how to craft and operate this block can turn complex navigation into a smooth process.

Gathering the Crafting Ingredients

Crafting a cartography table requires minimal resources that players can easily obtain early in their world. You will need two pieces of paper alongside four wooden planks of any variety. Paper is created at a crafting table using three pieces of sugarcane placed in a horizontal row.

Wooden planks can be obtained by processing raw wood logs collected from trees throughout your environment. Any combination of wood types will work, giving you flexibility when collecting supplies. Gathering these items takes very little time, making the block extremely accessible.

Assembling the Cartography Table

Open your standard crafting table interface to begin building the block. Place two pieces of paper side-by-side in the top row of the crafting grid. Directly below the paper, place four wooden planks filling out a two-by-two section.

Once the materials are arranged correctly, the cartography table icon will appear in the output slot. Move the completed table into your inventory and place it down anywhere in your base. It can also be found naturally in village cartographer houses.

Expanding and Cloning Maps

To use the table, interact with it to bring up the specialized mapping interface. Combining an existing map with a single sheet of paper allows you to zoom out and expand the map's visible boundary. This enables players to document vast stretches of land on a single sheet rather than carrying multiple smaller maps.

You can also duplicate your favorite maps by placing an active map alongside a blank map inside the interface. This generates an identical copy, which is perfect for sharing navigation data with friends on multiplayer servers. It ensures you always have a backup stored safely at home.

Locking Maps and Assigning Villager Jobs

Adding a glass pane to an existing map inside the cartography table will lock it permanently. Locked maps will no longer update as you alter terrain, making them ideal for historical displays or permanent world art walls. This prevents accidental overrides when exploring modified areas.

Beyond map editing, the block serves as an essential job site block for unemployed villagers. Placing a cartography table near an unassigned villager turns them into a cartographer. Trading with cartographers unlocks special explorer maps that reveal ocean monuments and woodland mansions.
